Candles, comfortable furniture, soft cushions, and warm blankets are probably the first things that come to mind when you consider what a hygge house contains. However, the concept of hygge can be felt by all of our senses rather than simply touch or sight.
Sounds and fragrances are just as significant when it comes to creating a hygge atmosphere in your home. The right mix of scents can help you relax and unwind after a long day, providing the perfect way to transition from work mode to chill mode.
There are endless possibilities when it comes to choosing candles and diffusers for your home. If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few of my favorite hygge-inducing sounds and scents.
The Crackle of a Wood-Burning Fire
There’s nothing like the sound of a wood-burning fire to create a sense of relaxation. I personally find the sound of a wood-burning fire to be very calming, and it’s one of the things I miss most about living in the country.
Even if you don’t have a fireplace, there are ways to bring the crackle of a wood-burning fire into your home. If you live in an apartment or another type of dwelling where having a real fire is not an option, you can try one of these:
- Purchase a small electric fireplace. Many of them come with a crackling sound effect that simulates the sound of a wood-fire.
- Play a recording of a wood-burning fire. You can find these online or on YouTube.
- If you have a fireplace but it’s not in use, try lighting a candle and placing it on the hearth. The flickering of the flame will add to the ambiance of the room.
Soft, Gentle Music Playing in the Background
Another sound that can help create a sense of relaxation is soft, gentle music — this could be anything from classical music to jazz to nature sounds.
I like to put on a classical piano playlist when I’m working on something that requires concentration. But when it’s time to relax, I might choose a jazz playlist or the sound of rain falling on leaves.
Whichever type of music you choose, make sure it’s not too loud or upbeat. The point is to create a peaceful atmosphere, not to energize yourself!
The Sound of Raindrops Hitting the Roof or Windows
For some people, the sound of rain is soothing. If this is the case for you, consider taking advantage of it by opening the windows and letting the rain lull you to sleep.
You could also try playing a recording of rainfall if you don’t live in an area where it rains very often. There are many different recordings available online, and you can find them for free on YouTube.
The Aroma of Freshly Baked Bread or Cookies
The scent of baking bread has been found to decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol. And fortunately, these aromas can also help you relax. So if you’re looking for a way to wind down after a long day, try baking some bread or cookies!
The Aroma of Lavender or Chamomile
Lavender is well-known for its relaxing properties, and the scent has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. Chamomile also has calming effects, and it’s often used as a natural remedy for insomnia.
You can find lavender and chamomile essential oils at most health food stores. Add a few drops to a diffuser or burner, and enjoy the relaxing fragrance throughout your home.
The Aroma of Fresh Coffee Brewing
The scent of coffee has energizing effects, but it can also help you relax. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that the aroma of freshly brewed coffee can decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol. So if you’re feeling tense after a long day, try brewing a pot of coffee and inhaling the calming scent of the beans.
Bottom Lines
When setting up your hygge centered space, don’t forget about the power of sound and scent. Consider adding a few of these hygge-inducing sounds and scents to your home to help you relax and unwind, and you’ll be on your way to achieving the perfect state of coziness.
